I think Sodapop understands Ponyboy more than Darry because Sodapop still knows what it's like to be a kid. Darry supports Ponyboy and Sodapop financially while Sodapop supports Ponyboy emotionally.
I like Sodapop. Madison, yes. He absolutely does know what it's like to be a kid. I really like Soda because he defends not just only Ponyboy, but almost everyone that's important to him, even Darry. He's one of my favorite characters because he actually knows what is going on around there.
