I don't think it is possible, but I think Sodapop becomes even happier in these chapters. I feel really bad for him though because he can't marry the girl he loved. He is very happy though that him, Darry, and Ponyboy are a real family now.
I agree with Kate that he does become happier in these chapters because he starts Joking around and laughing more, and even if Sandy left him he is still happy. I really like Sodapop because he brightens everybody's day and tries to protect all his friends and family. He is nice and sweet and I imagine he is really cute too. If I were to live in his time I would definitely want to be his girlfriend or his sister.
Ya, I picked up on that protectiveness throughout the book and especially when that big fight happened. That one soc kicked Ponyboy in the head a bunch and Soda jumped up and started defending him.
In chapters 1-4, Sodapop seemed like he had his life pretty figured out. He dropped out of school because he didn't want to go, has a job that he doesn't seem to mind doing, he has a great girlfriend, and he has nice brothers. The author mainly talks about Darry and Ponyboy's problems. But,as I kept reading, I realized that Sodapop really does have as much on his plate as Darry and Ponyboy. He looses his girlfriend, his brother almost dies, his brothers constantly fight, his friends die, and I have a feeling that his job and his parent's death are really weighing him down. I think that Sodapop's happy go lucky attitude just doesn't allow him to show how much he is really hurting.
