In my opinion Johnny has changed a lot since chapters 1-4. In chapters 1-4 Johnny was a sesitive kid, and he was very scared of the socs, since they attacked him. Then in chapters 5-8 he became tougher as he lived with Ponyboy in the old church, he also became braver. In the church he learned to live on his own and seemed to take care of Ponyboy. Also when the church was burning he went in with Ponyboy, and saved the children, and he got severly hurt to save other strangers lives. This is when he became braver.
I agree with Ellen at the beginning of the book Johnny was scared of everything and was very quiet but after he killed Bob he started looking after Ponyboy and toughened up. I was surprised Johnny went into the church to save those kids
