I think that when he gave Ponyboy the opportunity to pass the class with a C if he came up with a good semester theme it helped Ponyboy get over the loss of Johnny and what had happened in the book. I think he was finally able to talk about what had happened to somebody else. I think that Mr. Syme was very smart to do this and is a very understanding guy.
I agree with ellen. ponyboy boy hasn't been the same ever since jonnhy,dally,and bob died. So letting him pass with a C really helped him get over that.
