I think that Darry is a workaholic and is very stressed out trying to keep the family together and earn enough money to have food, water, clothing, and shelter. He also needs to protect his family from the socs, which is a hard job. I also think that when Darry is annoyed by something, he gets really mad because he is so stressed out, and sometimes he does things that he shouldn't, like slap Ponyboy.
Ellen, I agree with you. I think that Darry feels over-pressured. He works all of the time, and has to protect a lot of people. I understand how Ponyboy can dislike Darry, but Ponyboy doesn't understand Darry's situation. Darry is the oldest and after Ponyboy's parents died,most of the work was pushed toward him. I think Darry pushes Ponyboy because he's the last child, and Darry wants Ponyboy to get more out of life than he did. Darry had to stop his education because of shortage of money, and Darry works hard to not let that happen to Ponyboy.
i think he just needs a hobbie or something to keep his mind off of everything every once and a while. but otherwise he's doing a pretty awesome job of raising a family by himself, even under the pressure of everything. sad part is that at one time he didnt have to do all this stuff, because they had parents. but by the way he acts about it, you would think that he has always raised pony and soda. or thats what i thought. -Maya
Maya I agree with you, but I don't think that Darry has time for a hobby since he has two part-time jobs. He does everything else a mother and father would do in the house, cleaning, cooking, laundry, etc. I am sure he used to have a hobby and I am sure he is wishing he had the time for a hobby. I think he feels cut off from everybody else because he has so much responsibilities.
I beleive that he is very busy. He doesn't have time to enjoy life. Then having to know that the socs were after his kind. I would freak out. I get why at some point he just had to blow out steam.It would be great if he did have time for a hobby. Then he wouldn't be so mean and grump.It would make him realise anger.I also think its really good how he doesn't smoke to keep in shape.I think the other boys should take after himin that descision.I agree with everyone 100%!

I also think he hit ponyboy because he was under so much pressure he just couldn't handle it anymore so he let loose. I think he truly didnt mean it and ponyboy should have not run away

When he yells at Ponyboy it's not because he's mad as much as just worried that Pony might not come home, or might get hurt.

I think Derry is a good brother who looks out for Ponyboy and Sodapop. The only reason Derry yells at Ponyboy a lot is because he cares about him. Derry seems tough but I don't think he fits in with the Greasers.
