I think the whole situation with Johnny dying and Dally dying has kind of reminded Ponyboy about his parents dying. and so thats why, i think, he has stopped eating and he's been being lousy on his grades. He will probably recover and eventually start eating again and getting better grades. the thing with the theme his english teacher gave him will probably help get his mind of it too. -Maya
These chapters have really covered a lot of stuff. they went by really fast, a lot of stuff happened fast and in little time. first they're in the rumble, which leads to pony and dally going to see Johnny, Johnny dies, Dallas dies. Darry and Ponyboy agree to stop fighting because by doing that they are pulling soda apart, even though soda always acts very happy, reckless, and care free. in the rumble, ponyboy was thinking about why they fight, he asked himself why he fought, i think he fights because he feels compelled to, i dont think he fights because he hates the socs, i really think ponyboy doesnt care less about the socs, he just wants them to leave him and his gang alone. -Maya
Chapters 9-12 show all the affects to his sometimes, rational decisions. When they prepare for the rumble, like Maya said, Ponyboy questions his fellow Greasers why they want to fight. Ponyboy soon realizes that none of them really have a true cause for fighting. They just like it. Of course, once the rumble was over and the Greasers took victory, no problems were solved. Ponyboy and Dally hurry to the hospital to see Johnny. Ponyboy informs him of the news of the rumble. Johnny looked very weak when they saw him. I think Ponyboy secretly knew Ponyboy was already going to die after his last visit. When Johnny dies, Dally hits a breaking point. Dally goes and technically killed himself. In my opinion, Dally has been thinking about dying for a long time. This is when Ponyboy just can't take it anymore.
In chapter 9-12 a great deal of things happend. The rummble which the greasers win. Ponyboy getting sick. Jhonny getting weaker, Jhonny's death. Dally getting shot by the police officer, which he brought upon himself. Sodapop reaches his breaking point, amd brings the three brother together.
Chapters 9-12 showed what ponyboy went through when his parents died. His parents were close to him just like johnny and dally and his parents loved him and so did johnny and dally they all wanted what was best for ponyboy. Even though dieing wasnt on the list that is what happened its not ponyboys or dallys fault it was no ones fault. I think when ponyboy told that soc kid that came to visit him about how he might be put in a foster home and how his parents had died a while back and how his brothers were his only family i think Randy thought different of ponyboy and thought about if he was in ponyboys shoes. Also this is the chapters were the aftermath of the rumble happen. these are some things about chapters 9-12
I agree with everyone the situation was terrible. I believe there death would only make them stronger not worse. I also think the way Johnny had gotten sick he would have been taken straight to the boy's home. I also think the rumble was really ackward. I thought the Socs wouldn't have been scared and run away.I also thought that when Dally escaped from the hospital by pulling the knife she would call the cops.
true, olivia, but Dally probually told her not to call the cops. And the battle was odd i thought the socs should of been scared but they weren't i would if i were them because i knew i could be beat without the weapons i'm used it just seemed like they tryed to stay faith. It is hard to stay faith when the danger of dieing is right their.
I was wrong before when I said that chapters 5-8 were the most action- filled!!! The last four chapters are the most action- filled chapters in this book!!! They are wrapping up the end of the book!!! I understand how Ponyboy kind of went crazy because he saw two people die in one night!!! Also he believed that one of those people should never have died(Johnny). Right before he died, he said that he was okay now with dying because he felt that their lives were more important than his!!! He also told ponyboy to stay gold!!!!! Later on, ponyboy decides to start reading the copy of Gone With The Wind that was given to him by Johnny before he died!!! He opened up the book and found a letter from Johnny!!! He talked about how he knew he was gonna die, and he kept on telling ponyboy to tell dally that there was good in life!!!! He also told ponyboy to stay gold, and that he had figured out what it meant!!!!
Ponyboy seemmed very scared about the rumble. He didn't want anymore trouble caused. When he had talked to Randy, he understood the socs more. That night of the rumble Ponyboy was torn up. He had seen two people die, Johnny and Dally. Dally had taken it very hard after being there when Johnny died because Johnny was the only thing Dally loved. Dally ran out of the hospital and robbed a store. He called Darry and told him to get the others and come and help him hide from the police. When they got there, Dally had just gotten there and the police were close behind. Dally raised a gun at the police, but the police shot him first. The rest of the gang, other than Dally or Johnny, couldn't stand it. They watched him crumble up under the streetlight. When the police were searching Dally, they found Two-Bit's most prized possesion, his knife. Two- Bit groaned and everyone asked if that was all he cared about, but he said no but I wish it was. While I was reading the part about where Ponyboy needed to write a story about life experiences, I was thinking just write about all of the things you have been through, and at the end he does write about all of his troubles.
Chapters 9-12 really touched me. It was so sad but so good at the same time. I knew that Johnny was going to die since he wasn't getting any better. I had no idea about Dally I didn't think he would care, but he did. Apparently he robbed the store because he wanted to die. To him Johnny was the best thing in the world. He knew that his parents beat him up and never payed attention to him. Dally felt bad because Johnny never got a chance to live a good life.
I agree with maya in that these chapters went by so fast and I would not be able to deal with Johnny and Dally dying. If I were Dally, I would n't go steal from a store just to get a cop to shoot you. But that is just my opinion.
The rumble wasn't as long as I expected it to be. I thought it would be a long dragged out fight but was actually over in like a few minutes. It also seemed like Ponyboy was repressing his feelings over Johnny and Dally being dead but I am glad that he eventually accepted that and that the book had a happy ending.
I think its cool that the Greasers all know acrobatics. I bet in the summer that Darry taught the Greasers acrobatics they didnt' get in as much trouble. They might've gotten in more trouble though, just to show off their new skills. I think Ponyboy starts lieing to Randy about the knife and Bob dieing because he wishes it was him. He wants to take Johnny's place. Pony wants Johnny to live. If Johnny was still alive, Dally would still be alive. Pony thinks that if he would've pulled the blade on the Soc, Johnny and Dally would still be alive. Pony is scared, sad, and stuck in bed to mull over the emotions coming to the surface. He thinks jail would be better than a foster home.
I think these four chapters were the most realistic. The Greasers see, and cause violence all the time. Most of the time though, nobody dies. I think it is especially sad that the Greasers witnessed Dally's death. He wanted it that way though. I think Ponyboy started messing up in school, and forgetting things because he was in shock. Two dead buddies, being ordered to his bed, and almost being sent to a foster home made Pony's life really hectic and scary. Then everything went back to normal. Pony went back to school, he still lived with Darry and Soda, and he wasn't on bed rest. The only difference was the two buddies that weren't back to normal. The two buddies that would never be seen again. That difference made all the difference in the world to Pony. His life shook with the aftermath and he slowly, was falling apart.
I liked and disliked these chapters. I liked them because they were very animated. I disliked them because Ponyboy lost his best-friend(Johnny), and his "brother"(Dally.) He also just lost it. His grades started to drop and he didn't care. I was angry with Ponyboy. He has the option to do something with his life, where as his brothers already gave their chance up for him. The outcome of the book left me sad. Dally and Johnny died. They won the rumble, but not even that could bring back Johnny, which I think was (secretly) one of the real reasons the Greasers were fighting. Ponyboy got his English grade up to a C. I think Johnny was happier... which made me happy. Johnny said in his note that it was worth it that he had saved those kids. I don't think Johnny would have not saved them if he could go back and do it again. I wish Dally had known that.
I agree with you Olivia. I never thought that the Socs would give up so easily. I also think that when Dally used the knife to escape from the hospital that the nurse would have called the police! I think she might have been glad to have him out!
Ponyboy is not himself in the final chapters mainly due to the death of Johnny and Dally. I think writing about himself helped him overcome his sadness and hoped to help other people understand what life as a greaser was like. I feel like he knows that there are other boys out there like him, and that maybe they could learn from his mistakes.
These last 4 chapters were really sad but the best of the whole book.I was really sad that Dally died like right after Johnny.I know I would have gone nuts if I lost two people that meant a lot to me in one night.I think that since both Johnny and Dally died it had brought the gang a lot more closer than they were before. The last chapters also taught me you could be rich like the Socs or not so rich like the Greasers but in the end you all come together for the ones you love.
I really enjoyed the last four chapters, they were really emotional. It was really sad when Johnny died. You could see that Johnny was so important to everyone in the gang and that they were lost without him, but Johnny had saved all those kids from the fire. The book got even more emotional when Dally died. They all thought they would be lost without both Dally and Johnny, but they found a way to move forward together.
I agree with Madison I really enjoyed the part about how Sodapop brought the three brothers together. I think it is really important that they stay close to each other since they are all they have left in their family.
I agree with Thomas that Ponyboy is not himself in the last few chapters. He is dealing with his friends' death, and hopes to make a better life for himself and the other boys that are going through what he has gone through. He is different from the other greasers because he didn't have a "bad boy" attitude. He is determined to make his life better after losing his friends. He writes his story in a english paper. He wants to help other kids that have had a hard life.I think he wants to tell them not to give up or lose hope.
At the end of the story, the Greasers came together as a family to defend one of their own,Jonny. They stuck up for him and each other at the rumble .But,in the end, three boys were killed in the story. Belonging to a gang caused and contributed to Bob,Jonny, and Dally's death. No one ever wins...being a member of a gang.
I think that Ponyboy feels lonely that he doesn't know why he fights, but everybody else does. I think that he doesn't like fighting and only does to prove his brothers wrong. I think he was comfortable talking to Randy and Cherry because they didn't like to fight.
The last four chapters of The Outsiders were very emotional. I can't believe that Johnny and Dally dies. I also felt bad for Soda that Sandy moved away to Florida and she didn't even open the letter. Yes, I totally agree with Kara. It's very important that they stay close to each other after they lost two of their very close friends. I absolutley LOVED reading this book.
I loved how in the end of the book Ponyboy started his theme, "When I stepped out of the moviehouse, I only had two things on my mind, a ride home and Paul Newman." I love how it ended up that way...It made a very good ending to the story. Also, I realized how much Pony cared about Johnny because he kept trying to convince himself that Johnny was alive. I'm not sure, but when Pony told Randy that he was the one that killed Bob, I think Pony didn't want anyone thinking of Johnny as a bad person. This was one of my favortie books! -Macy
I agree with Nina. I think that Dally growning up in a really bad neighborhood and Johnny's parents abusing him he thinks they have something in common. Dally thinks Johnny was still young and could have done something with his life instead of Dally who would die a criminal. I think he told them to run away because if he told the police they went to Texas why would they need to run away. I think that he wanted him to start a new life where they aren't considered greasers, but people.
I agree with aaron. You can never win in a gang.In most of the story they just went back and forth.Until finally they realized they were all the same. The only big difference between the socs and is that the socs are rich ,and the greasers aren't.Thats what the book is trying to say even though everyone has their differences we arent that much different from each other.
I agree with aaron and jonathan. In that situation all that happens is you get hurt and make people angry until someone gets killed. The only real difference is one side is poor and, the other rich.
I think that the ending was just sad though. To of the gang's best friends die. And Dally really shouldn't have. He didn't need to rob that store and get shot. Johnny I could see that happening in the start because he was the dark horse character to me. Just kind of flew under the radar until he killed Bob. So that made the story get very interesting.
WOW! this was my favorite section of the book, so many things in such a short time. It was really a lot of emotion and action filled. so sad that Johnny died after the rumble, he had such a sad life. I wish his parents would have not treated him so bad and ignored him. Would have been good for his Mother to see him before he died. Sodapop seems like a strong person and is a good brother to bring them all back together. Ponyboy will always appreciate his friendship with Johnny and Darry, Darry should not have shot at the police. it was so sad for him to die. He was also very troubled. Ponyboy lost 2 good friends. I am glad he didnt have to go to jail for the death of Bob. really good book i will watch the movie to see if they are the same. It was a good book for teenagers and the author really seemed to understand life as a teen. ZACHARY BROWN
