Chapters 5-8 are very realistic. I think these chapters give readers an afterthought. Ponyboy and Johnny realize they can't turn back. After Dally finds them, Ponyboy realizes the kind of trouble he's in. Ponyboy also realizes that Darry, his brother really cares for him and is sorry for ever hitting him. When Johnny is injured in the fire, reality hits Ponyboy and he sees the kind of mess he got himself into. When Ponyboy went back home after the murder, he notices the tension greater than ever between the Socs and the Greasers. Ponyboy soon learns of the rumble and kinda goes insane. When Cherry, a Soc wants to help him, he says no, because he thinks its her fault Bob was killed. That's when the rumble begans..
i wonder what started the whole "Soc" and "Greaser" thing. Probably one guy who wore grease in his hair and was a "greaser" (but was not yet called that) and some rich kid didnt get along, and lots of other kids started to take sides, until they came up with the nicknames "greaser and soc.". and eventually it ruled the neighborhood. I also wonder what its like at school for these kids, do they fight at school too? but maybe they are just kind of being forced to be together at school. well, that really didnt have anything to do with chapters 5-8 in particular... -Maya
its kind of unexpected that ponyboy and johnny were actually good friends. because the way ponyboy describes johnny in the begining made me think that they were just friends, not really great buddies like they are. i think that maybe ponyboy starts to realize how good friends they are as the book progresses. -Maya
i really think that the police shouldn't punish johnny and ponyboy for killing bob. they helped those kids out of the church and saved the kids lives, so they need some credit for that. if they helped those kids out of the fire, they cant be that bad of people. the church thing can kind of serve as a community service thing to repay for killing bob. and i know its bad that they killed bob, but he was going to hurt/kill johnny and ponyboy anyways, so it was just self defense. and the other soc was drowning ponyboy so johnny was just trying to save his friend. and thinking about ponyboy's and johnny's personalities, they aren't going to go on a killing spree. but i thing the police should probably watch them though, thinking from the police's point of view, they don't really know ponyboy and johnny well enough to know their personalities. -Maya
I agree with Maya. I don't think that the police should severly punish Ponyboy and Jhonny. I think it is punishment enough that Jhonny is sick and won't be able to walk again, because he and Ponyboy risked their lifes to save the kids. Also I don't think it is fair that the police are charging Jhonny with manslaughter. If he didn't stab Bob Ponyboy might not be alive. Therefore it was only self denfense.
I agree with maya also they should punish severly because they were using self defence johnny was just protecting ponyboy. Also it was wrong for the boys to run from what they did because then is says that that they did something bad. If they went to the police right when it happened johnny wouldnt be dead and darry wouldnt be dead. I just think that they could of made things easyer if they did that it is just my prefence. Can you guys tell me what you think they should of done??
Katie, I think they should have done what you said and not run. Then like you said Jhonny and Darry wouldn't be dead. I agree with you when you said when they ran it showed that they did something wrong. I also agree wiht you when you said if the didn't run it would make things easier.
I think that they should be punished because they ran away, just like you said Maddie and Katie, but they shouldn't be punished to severly. Johnny did kill someone and they did run away, but it was all self-defense. I really wish that Ponyboy and Johnny had turned themselves in earlier. They wouldn't have been in as much trouble, especially because people were willing to defend them, saying that it was only self-defense. I really hope that Darry, Ponyboy, and Sodapop don't get seperated. They were finally becoming a close family, but then there is a possibility that they might get seperated. They have worked too hard to get to where they are at to get seperated.
I personally really enjoyed chapter 5-8. They were very interesting. They show real action. Also a lot of questions are answered in these chapters. So far, I really, really enjoy this book. One thing that really surprises me in these chapters, is when Johnny's mom comes to visit him at the hospital. I completely understand why Johnny doesn't want her to come see him. She treated him terribly, never showed him affection or care, and never acted like a real mom. I just don't get why she chose the time to care now, after there were plenty of other times that Johnny needed care and love. She must've had a bad childhood or something, because who would treat their kids so poorly; I know that while I'm saying this there are a ton of parents who treat their kids poorly all the time. A thought that might come to you while thinking about that is that she might feel she doesn't want to keep him close to her, because she knows she doesn't have the money to care for him, and she probably doesn't want to make his childhood any worse, but that doesn't seem the case with this mom.
I really love this book, but I am scared to read ahead I know some bad things are going to happen at the rumble and later on. I am really worried for Ponyboy because he is young and has a good chance of getting killed and also the Socs want to kill him since he was there when Bob died. I am also worried for Johnny since his bones are broken and he is not getting any better.
I think if Ponyboy, Soda, and Darry are going to be separated Pony will run away again. I don't think they will though. I think Dally is going to do something big and bad tonight. He might break out of the hospital. I am worried for Cherry. She will get in trouble if the Soc's find out she's hanging out with Ponyboy. The last time she hung out with him 1 boy was dead and 2 more were running from the cops. I think somebody's going to die at the fight. I hope Johnny lives, he doesn't deserve to die. He's young but has seen things even adults don't forget after they see. p.s. When I clicked the FOLLOW button the picture came up as Megan Maner. So that's me......
In this chapter Ponyboy and Johnny killed Bob. They asked Dally for some money to buy food. They were going to hide in an abandoned church on top of a hill. Johnny went to the store and got food, soap, a pack of cigarettes, hair dye, and a book for Johnny to read. Johnny dyed Ponyboy’s hair to blond and cut it too. Then Johnny noticed it didn’t change it physical notices. Johnny and Ponyboy decided to turn them in then there was a fire and kids were in the church and saved all the kids. Although Johnny hurt his back badly while Ponyboy was fine, they were sent to the hospital to recover.
These four chapters had the most important parts of the story so far. The first four chapters just were mostly an introduction explaining what happens between greasers and Socs. There was only action in the last 2 chapters. It really makes you think about what you would have to go through in this situation. Imagine having to go back to where your shelter is and find it's burning to the ground because of you and kids are trapped inside. Imagine coming back a hero not long after killing a man with a switchblade, only to save your best friend. I would never survive it, to tell you that. Then preparing for the biggest fight in your life. I mean, what else is there.
I agree with Kate F. about Johnny. Imagine going home and nobody cares if you've just been beat up or had the best day of your life. It isn't fair. Nobody should go through that. If Johnny didn't have the gang, he would be depressed every day of his life.
I'm glad Ponyboy realized how muchy Darry loved him, but I'm sorry it took so long. He saw the love behind the mask of his strict older brother. Darry and Soda are the ones who keep that family going and Darry gets mad when Pony makes a mistake. When Darry cracked, he hit Pony. The boys eventually realize that whatever happens they are still brothers. Brothers have to stick together when bad things happen. I just wish it didn't take a boy dieing and another to break his back for them to realize it.
I really enjoyed chapters 5-8. I liked them because you really see how brotherly and caring the Greasers are for one another. You really see that Dally, although still tough, really cares about Johnny and Ponyboy. He gave them money, a jacket, directions, and also dealt with the "fuzz" for them. When Ponyboy went to the hospital his brothers were there waiting for them. When he got home Steve and Two-Bit came over. Ponyboy had said that Steve never really liked him, but I think he does. It's funny to see the two different sides of the Greasers. One being tough and the other being caring!
I agree with Madison Mitchell and Maya. I think that the police should not make them go to jail. I do think that they should get punished slightly by doing a certain amount of community service hours or something like that. I say that because if people see that two boys can runaway and kill somebody and get away with it they might get mad. I think that they shouldn't get punished horribly because they saved kids and are injured! I think the police should not only punish Johnny and Ponyboy but should punish the Socs that tried to kill and harm them!
I really loved chapter 5-8.I liked the chapters because you can get the idea that the brothers cared about each other.Dally really cared about the most 2 favorite brothers they are Johnny and Ponyboy. He gaved them everything they wanted.like a leather coat and money and he also took up for his brothers when they were facing the 'fuzz'.It was really caring to see that the brothers stood up for they self and there brothers.they were Greasers 'till' the end.
I really took in the book for chapters 5-8.Like for these chapters i felt like the whole gang started really acting like a family. For example when Johnny killed Bob Ponyboy stayed with him an didn't back out.I also agree with Rebecca,Madison, and Maya about that the police should not put them in jail but to give them something like community service to make up for the killing. But yeah I really loved how they all became super close.
I really feel bad that johnny died. It is good that Cherry is on Ponyboy's side because she has turned out to be some what of a spy. Chapters 5-8 where very exciting but emotional.
The fire in the old church brought out the true hero in Johnny and Ponyboy. They didn't even think twice about putting their lives at risk. Dallas said that it would be too dangerous but they didn't care. They ran into the church and all they could think about was saving those children, they took each kid one by one and placed them out the window. They saved all of the children. Ponyboy managed to get out with a minor ingury but Johnny was still in the church when a big piece of burning wood fell on his back and he was severly ingured. Good thing that Dallas went into save him they both got out but Dallas was ingured too but not nearly as bad as Johnny. Johnny may not live and if he does he will be crippled for the rest of his life. The message that I got from this was that it doesn't matter if you are a greaser or a Soc, anybody can be a hero.
I think Kate F. made a good point about Johnny's mother and her visit to the hospital. I don't get why she came to visit, when she does not even care about him. From reading this I saw that his mom is not going to be there for him and his friend always will.
I think that Ponyboy and Johnny were brave to save the children from the burning building. I understand why he did that, but I would of been too scared. I think when Ponyboy told jerry what happened, I don't think Jerry understood what life is like to be a greaser.
I agree with Maya because if I was the police I would punish both of them and not take sides. I would understand that the police would punish the greasers more because he wouldn't want to become an enemy of the socs, because they probaly could make you lose your job or give you a bad reputation.
These chapters were very good. I'm so happy for Johnny and Ponyboy for being heroes, but so sad that Johnny got hurt so badly. It was VERY brave of them to save those children in the church building.I agree with Madison Mermelstein. I do think Ponyboy was having nightmares of his parents dying because he was worried about losing Johnny. Cherry Valance. I'm still not too sure about her... I still can't tell if she's helping the Greasers or if she's planning a trick on the greasers for the socs... does anyone know what I mean?
I honestly don't think that Johnny and Ponyboy shold get punished at all. Johnny only killed Bob for self defence and to save Ponyboy from being drowned to death. Also, I don't think Johnny actually meant to kill Bob; I think he meant to hurt him enough to stop drowning Ponyboy. I think Ponyboy overreacted a little for running away, but Darry did hit him hard. I have feelings for Darry now. I'm glad that everything is doing good between him and Ponyboy. I can't believe that Johnny and Ponyboy saved thoses children. It was very brave of them.
I agree, I think that Bob's group should be punished actually. They A., almost killed Ponyboy and B., attacked Johnny. I also think Johnny was, in my opinion, completely in the right to defend himself and Ponyboy by stabbing Bob.
This is a good part of the book, I really liked the rumble between the socs and the greaser. I felt sorry for Ponyboy because of Johhny. This would be a true act of friendship in the greasers eyes. After Bob was killed everything got worse for the greasers and the socs. Life was sure different back then than it is now. I think I would have liked to be a social because they have all the money and live on the right side of the track in their opinion. The greasers seem like they are better friends
I was wondering the same thing...why would Johnny's mother come visit him even if she didn't care about him? However, I completely agree with you. His friends are actually there for him instead of his family. I find that very strange though. I mean I can see why his friends, but not your family? That is cruel.
This chapter was really intense to me. With Johnny and Pony running away and the fact that Johnny gets hurt saving those kids. It was really good of him to do that though. He and Pony didn't have to, they just did.
