Ponyboy Curtis is a greaser in this story. His brothers, Sodapop and Derry are also greasers. Ponyboy is always used to having someone watch out for him. When walking back from the movies alone, the Socs (Socials) attack him. Ponyboy realizes that without the greasers or his brothers he is and always will be helpless. I think Ponyboy doesn't want to be a greaser or a Soc. Ponyboy just wants to live somewhere where everyone is happy and no one would judge him. When Johnny,a timid, and nervous kid, saves Ponyboy's life by killing a Soc, they have no choice but to run away. Ponyboy is distraught. He knows he cannot any longer wait for brothers to come and rescue him. It's just him and Johnny now.
ReplyDeleteI think Ponyboy would enjoy the country for a while, but eventually he would probably miss his old life, because at least it made his life interesting. he just wants to get away from the Socs and all the violence between the them and the greasers and recoup for a while.
ReplyDelete-Maya
I really don't think Darry meant it when he hit Ponyboy, maybe something else had angered Darry earlier that night and he just let it out on Ponyboy. Darry probably loves Ponyboy just as much as Sodapop, but its just not his personality to show it. Darry only probably hit him just to prove his point that Ponyboy shouldn't stay out that late and was just worried about Ponyboy.
ReplyDelete-Maya
i really really like this book. i really don't know why though, i guess its just my style. i really like that one paragraph when he was talking about living in the country, when he was comparing his life now and what it would be like. it really kind of put the whole book in perspective. it really made me think about all the characters and what there place is in the book. i don't know if anyone else thought that too, but thats what went though my mind.
ReplyDelete-Maya
I agree with Maya that Darry really didn't mean to hit Ponyboy. I think he was just showing that he really loves and cares for Ponyboy and doesn't want anything to happen to him, but he is showing it in a bad way. I also thought that maybe when Darry was younger he fell asleep in the lot and something terrible happened to him, and now that he knows the same thing could have happened to his own brother, his anger took control of him and he slapped Ponyboy hard.
ReplyDeleteWhy does Ponyboy run away even after Darry tells him he didn't mean to?
ReplyDelete-Joseph
Joseph, Ponyboy had had enough. It wasn't just the hitting an yelling that made him leave, he just wanted freedom from his lifestyle. I think Ponyboy just panicked and couldn't think of anything else to do. Ponyboy also already thought Darry hated him. He couldn't take being insulted like that by his own brother.
ReplyDeleteHannah, I agree with you. He was so struck by Darry's actions, that he wasn't in the right mind. You are also right about how he had had enough. He felt that Darry didn't care about him and that they didn't need eachother. Also running away was the first thing that popped into his mind. He knew that he would have someone to run away with too. Before the fight, he re-thought his actions. Ponyboy felt that running away wasn't the right thing to do, but after the fight he knew that he had to. Not only Johnny would be in a lot of trouble, but he would also be in a lot of trouble.
ReplyDeleteanswering sharons question) ponyboy has had enough of darry's harasment. Darry has been doing this long enough, ponyboy just couldn't take it anymore. But then u see that darry actually was just scared for ponyboy even though he doesn't act like he cares he cares a whole lot more than ponyboy knows. He was mad that ponyboy was late and felt egnored when ponyboy wouldnt answer his questons he was just watching out for his brother even though it was wrong to hit ponyboy when he didn't come home at the time he should have.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kate!
ReplyDeleteThe Outsiders is about Ponyboy Curtis, who is a greaser. He has many brothers that are also greasers. There is also another gang called the Socs. They are basically rich kids who like jumping greasers. Johnny, another greaser was jumped once and was so scared afterwards, he now carries a six-inch switchblade with him. Ponyboy gets jumped after going to the movies but his brothers and other greasers save him. Most of the gang goes to the drive-in theater one night and Ponyboy and Johnny find two girls there named Cherry and Marcia they hang out and the boys try to walk the girls home. This ends when Socs show up to grab the girls and take them home. Later, these same boys jump the two boys and one was drowning Pony so Johnny stabbed him and killed him, so they ran away. Before this, Pony came home late and Darry, a brother got angy and hit pony out of anger.
ReplyDeleteJack, make sure you tell me how you feel/what you think about the chapters in addition to what happens in the chapters. Keep up the good work, guys! ;)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Maya and Ellen when they said that Darry really didn't mean to hit Ponyboy. I think Darry was just mad because he was scared that something happended to Ponyboy, and he was angry with Ponyboy for worring him and he got caught up and the moment and hit Ponyboy. I think in a way by hitting Ponyboy Darry showed that he loved Ponyboy. I think he showed that because if he didn't love him he wouldn't have cared were Ponyboy was and wouldn't have slapped him.
ReplyDeleteYes,I agree with Maya and Ellen, but I don't get why Soda or Darry didn't try to come and find Ponyboy after he ran away. I also agree with Maddie because Darry is kind of the dad in the family who worries about Pony and Soda. The three brothers only have each other since they lost their parents. Even though Darry probably doesn't like all the responsibilities he has to because he is the oldest. Darry doesn't want Pony to turn out bad or worse dead.
ReplyDeleteThe first few chapters set of the main thing about the book the book is about two gangs the socs and the greasers. they tell you about most of the characters. In these first few chapters ponyboy almost gets jumped. His first mistake was comeing home alone and his other mistake was not tring to scream for help at the first sign of danger or to start running as fast as he can when he first saw the socs drive up. I also think that darry is like a dad to the boys and sodapop is like pomyboys bodygaurd but doesnt have to be with him every second. I also agree with ellen and maya darry didnt mean to he was just upset that ponyboy wasnt home at the time he should of been and he wasnt answering darry when darry asked him why he wasnt home at the right time. these are somethings about chapters 1-4
ReplyDelete--- katie Brown:)
I really agree with Ellen and Maya. Darry didn't mean it. He probably was just scared. stressed and really nervous. Ponboy should've just waited a minute or just go out side to cool off. I beleive Darry just doesn't express hisself good. I also, don't get that if Sodapop knew that Dally knew where they were. why didn't he make him take him to them? why did he just send a letter. If he knew so well then he should've came and made them come back.
ReplyDeleteI think that Dally was very helpful to Ponyboy and Johnny while they were running away. He gave them a gun, money, a jacket to Ponyboy, directions, and an idea of shelter. Also, I think that Ponyboy becomes more grateful for the church later on in the book, rather than how he reacted at the end of the chapter. Answer to Olivia's question: I think that Sodapop knew that it was best that Johnny and Ponyboy's location was kept secret. Sodapop might've accidentally told someone he shouldn't have told, and everything would go downhill. Also, Dally was very hard to crack, and there was no use trying to get him to tell. Also, if people noticed a bunch of greasers, even just two, a lot more attention would be drawn to them.
ReplyDeleteI think that when Pony gets jumped he realizes how important his friends are when they save him. The next day when he is at the movies he starts to understand that Greasers and Socs aren't that different, and the only thing that really separates them is that the Greasers are poor and the Socs are rich. Pony gets home late from the movies and Derry, his oldest brother, yells at him and then hits him. He only does this because he's worried about Pony, but Pony becomes angry and runs away to meet up with Johnny, his closest friend. When both Johnny and him start to head back to Pony's house they get jumped. Johnny stabs one of the Socs because they were drowning Pony. They go to one of the gang members who tells them where to hide and they run away to a old deserted church. Both of them scared, cold, and hungry.
ReplyDeleteI think that Johnny and Ponyboy won't last in the country. They are used to having someone be there for them. When someone wasn't Johnny was beaten. Then alone again, Johnny killed a Soc. I don't think, even if they had trials then, and Johnny was brought in, Johnny would get a fair trial. He is a greaser. Greasers like Dally, steal and end up in jail. Greasers like Johnny are then stereotyped and looked down upon.
ReplyDeleteI feel sorry for Ponyboy, Darry, and Sodapop. Darry has given up the last years of his childhood to make a living. Soda has given up school. Well, that might have been because he didn't want to go, but that might have been because Darry wasn't making enough money. Two out of three of the brothers are working, like adults. zero out of the three brothers wanted to act like adults. Ponyboy is then left to fend for himself. When he came home late, I think Darry hit him because he thought he hadn't done well enought. Darry thought that he wasn't being a good enough brother/father. Big brothers/fathers can't cry. So he hit him. Darry didn't want to hit Ponyboy, he even said that he wanted to take it back, but brothers/fathers can't turn time back. He hit Ponyboy and now Ponyboy is in an abandoned church in the county. I think Dally better run too, because if Darry finds out that Dally gave Ponyboy and Johnny advice and money, Dally's going to be as beaten up as Johnny was when the Soc with the rings went at him.
I really think that Darry didn't mean to hit Ponyboy and that it was done out of the emotions of the moment. I think Darry was scared that something was going to happed to Pony.
ReplyDeletePony Boy is a greaser (like his brothers and their friends). His brothers are Sodapop and Darry Curtis. His friends are Two-Bit Matthews,Dallas Winston, and Johhny Cade. They are very often harrased by a group of rich kids called the Socs, short for socials. Johhny, before the events in the book took place, was beat up badly by a group of Socs.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 1 Ponboy is just leaving from a movie when he is jumped by a group of Socs. Just a Soc is going to stab him his friends and brothers came running to his rescue and fought off the Socs. After being yelled at by Darry Ponyboy agrees to go to a movie with Dallas and Johhny.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 2 Ponyboy, Dallas, and Johhny arrived at the drive-in movie theater. There the they met two girls Cherry and Marcia. A few minutes later Dallas leaves because Cherry threw her coke at him. As Dally leaves Ponyboy's friend Two-Bit Matthews arrives and strikes up a conversation with Marcia. Ponyboy and Cherry left to go get sodas. As they are waiting in line at the connsession stand Ponyboy tell Cherry about the time when he and the greasers found Johhny slumped over in the football field. Soon after Cherry and Ponyboy came back to the theater Cherry and Marcia's boyfriends came took them home leaving Ponyboy and Johhny alone. They soon go out to a parking lot near the theater and fall asleep.

ReplyDeleteIn this book is a book about socs and greasers. In the beginning It was a chapter about who everyone is what they like. Like Ponyboy liked going to the movies but once they went home he got home he got jumped. The were going to cut off his hair but then the greasers came to help him.
ReplyDeleteThen he got yelled at by his guardian then his friends Dallas and Johnny agreed to go the movies with him tomorrow. In the movie theater they met some girls named Cherry Valance and Marcia. Dallas left the movie theaters early before the movies ended. Then after that Two-bit comes and has a conversation with Marcia. Ponyboy went to go get some soda and popcorn. Once he came back with some Cherry Valance and Marcia left. Ponyboy was tired and slept in the parking lot. Once he woke up and came back home Darry yelled at Ponyboy and hit him he ran away. His brothers came back to calm him down.
I feel sorry for the Greasers. They are living hard lives. Many are without parents, or without parents that care. That is probably one of the reasons the Greasers hate the Socs. The Socs probably have parents that care. The Greasers don't go looking for fights though both times fights were mentioned the Socs were on the offensive side. These fights were when Johnny got beaten up and when Johnny and Ponyboy are attacked by the fountain.
ReplyDeleteKate M.,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I feel bad for the Greasers because their parents either don't care, or aren't there, but I think that the Greasers don't like the Socs for a different reason. I think that the Greasers hate the Socs not only because they have parents, but because they view the Socs life as easy. They realize that both sides have it hard (for different reasons) when they meet Cherry.
I think that Darry didn't mean to hit Ponyboy. I think Darry is used to being the "father" of the family, and was angry at Ponyboy because he thinks that Ponyboy doesn't understand what Darry gave up to "raise" Soda and Ponyboy. I also think that Darry didn't want anything to happen to Ponyboy because he cares about Ponyboy more then he lets on.
ReplyDeleteI believe that they all have a really close relationship.that everything go through just makes them closer. I agree with Rebecca and Kate m. they do have a really difficult life. I also believe that darry didnt mean to hit Ponyboy. It was just the heat of the moment. I also agree with Rebecca. Darry really cares about Ponyboy that why he is so strick on him.
ReplyDeleteAndrew,
ReplyDeleteI agree on how you said in the beginning he got jumped. He was also getting tired of them picking on him.The next 2 days after they saw the Socs rode around in a circle in that pretty bluue mustang everyone was like how come they keep on looking at us like dat.So the Socs came back and jumped all of the Greasers and Darry had a sore on his head because he tried to fight the Socs back so I really do agree on what you saing Andrew.
I think that Darry loves Ponyboy or he wouldn't of cared if he was out late or if he does well in school.I think Darry hit Ponyboy because he was scared something might of happened to him. I think Ponyboy thinks that Darry is mad at him, but I think that Darry was just worried.
ReplyDeleteI think that Darry loves Ponyboy or he wouldn't cared if he was late or if he studies or not. I think that when Darry hit Ponyboy he wasn't angry, just worried. I think Ponyboy thought that he was just angry and didn't understand that Darry really cared about him.
ReplyDeleteKatie,
ReplyDeleteI think that Darry hitting Ponyboy was wrong, even though he was angry and worried about what could happen to Ponyboy. I think it is the only way Darry feels he can make a point with Ponyboy. Darry is just a kid himself and doesn't really know how to be a good parent or role model. I think he is just doing what he knows how to do.
I totally agree with Madison.Darry is just a kid himself.I think at the point where Darry hit Ponyboy it was because he was so scared to loose Ponyboy, like he had lost his parents already.I feel the reason Darry is so much harder on Ponyboy is because he knows what he should exspect from Ponyboy. That he can do great as long as he has his mind to it.But at the same time they are both just kids.
ReplyDeleteI think Cherry should like Ponyboy and when I say like, I mean love. They seem to really get each other, and enjoy each others company. They seem to have alot in common even though they are from two different worlds. I really didn't like it when suddenly Cherry said that she could fall in love with Winston, right in front of Ponyboy. Is she blind? It's obvious Ponyboy cares about her. It is too bad that Cherry will probably never love Ponyboy because Ponyboy's friend Johnny, killed Cherry's boyfriend, Bob.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Ponyboy misjudged Darry. When Darry slapped him, Ponyboy thought that Darry was just being mean, but meanwhile Darry was showing Ponyboy he cares and worries alot about him. You could tell that Darry felt really bad after slapping Ponyboy, but it was too late because he had already run off.
ReplyDeleteI think Darry over reacted a little. I mainly agree with madison mer.
ReplyDeleteI agree whole hearted with Thomas, Darry is defininetly overreacting.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Darry overreacted that much. So I don't agree.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Ponyboy want's to be a greaser or a soc. The way they the soc are treating Ponyboy isn't really nessacery. And Ponyboy needs to stand up to the socs and stop being afraid.
ReplyDeleteI think Darry ment to hit Ponyboy. Darry has to many authorities so he thinks he is in charge of everything
ReplyDeleteI think that Ponyboy and Johnny were brave to go into the burning building to save the children. I understand why he went in, but I would be to scared. When Ponyboy told Jerry what happened I don't think Jerry understood what it's like to be a greaser, so he tells Ponyboy that they would count it as self-defense.
ReplyDeleteI think that the fact that they went into that burning building just showed what kind of person both Ponyboy and Johnny were. They risked their lives for random kids. They are just good people for that.
ReplyDeleteI think these chapters were very good in describing the personalities of the people in the gang. With Dally helping them out and just showing us how they operated as a group. Soda and Steve are best friends but Steve isn't as fond of Pony because i think he feels jealous of Pony's place with Soda. Darry is the big brother who's tough and acts as like the parent. Johnny is the puppy of the group. He's quiet and just goes with it. So these chapters helped me see what these people were like.
ReplyDeleteI think this book is about the conflict between the to grops of people the socs and greasers. It tells you about the fact that both sides have issues and is about the fact that neither are the bad guys. Their both fighting, and they are both the issue and because of that people get hurt and people like Pony and Johnny have to run away.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Hannah and Kate Ferencsik. Ponyboy has had enough nonsence coming from Darry and Ponyboy deserves to have freedom. This may not sound right, but I am actually glad that Johnny killed that Soc. I was really surprised because Johnny doesn't seem at all like that type of person. I know Ponyboy and Johnny are in deep trouble, but they did a good thing running away.
ReplyDeleteThese first four chapters were very exciting. I don't think I like Darry very much because he's too mean and agressive. I still don't understand why Darry had to slap him. I know Darry was worried, but what was the point? I also feel bad for Johnny because everyone says he's the gang's "pet" and because he got almost killed by the socs. I love how Sodapop stands up for Ponyboy.
ReplyDeleteI really like this book so far, I think the action is the best, I was scared for Ponyboy when the socials tried to cut his hair and held a knife to his throat. I felt bad for the brothers all 3 since the parents were killed in a wreck, I also felt bad for Ponyboy because he doesnt think his Brother likes him anymore since he is his guardian now. Sodapop is cool
ReplyDeleteI think this book is mostly about Ponyboy and the greasers. The villians are probably the socs.
ReplyDeleteI'm really liking this book so far. The chapters tell alot and i think the book is going to cover alot on Ponyboy's internal conflicts.
ReplyDeleteThe Outsiders seems like it is a good book so far. Ponyboy and his brothers are apart of the greasers which is a gang. The other gang is called the Socs this gang is nothing like the greasers they are spoiled bullies who pick on the greasers.
ReplyDelete
